This state-of-the-art cleanroom is designated to function as an optical laboratory, supporting the critical manufacturing and assembly of optical instruments used on satellites. These satellites play a crucial role in monitoring climate change by collecting and transmitting data to computer models run by scientific institutions worldwide.

Project Scope

The cleanroom required a comprehensive approach, including:

  • Mechanical & electrical services
  • Architectural finishes
  • Complete office strip-out before installation
  • Validation, commissioning, and handover of the cleanroom and optical laboratory

Dalkia’s team was tasked with ensuring the facility met stringent ISO Class 5 certification requirements.

Design Standards

The facility was designed to comply with a range of standards, including:

  • ISO 14644 (Cleanrooms and associated controlled environments)
  • ECSS suite of standards (European Cooperation for Space Standardisation)
  • UK Building Control
  • CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) design and installation best practices

Project Execution

The cleanroom suite features:

  • A dedicated cleanroom accessible from a changing room via an air shower
  • An adjacent control room to monitor activities within the cleanroom

Given the cleanroom’s location within an operational facility, which includes office spaces and an existing cleanroom, the development plan prioritised minimal disruption to normal operations. Dalkia coordinated closely with our client to mitigate the impact of structural and building activities, especially concerning noise and dust, to limit downtime and maintain productivity.

Outcome

Upon completion, the cleanroom will serve as a critical component in the manufacture and assembly of optical instruments for satellites. This facility will enhance the ability of our client to support global climate monitoring efforts by ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data collected through satellite-based sensors.
