Celebrating Successful Apprenticeships
To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we asked former apprentices Stuart Craig, Liam Park and Dylan Campbell to reflect on their apprenticeships with Dalkia and the successful careers they continue to develop.
Our apprenticeship programme is a cornerstone of our commitment to workforce development, providing young talent with the hands-on experience and training they need to thrive in the construction industry.
We have been delighted to see numerous apprentices transition into long-term careers with us, bringing stability, expertise and innovation to the company.
Inspiring the next Generation
Senior Project Manager, Stuart Craig (pictured), started working with us 35 years ago as a pipefitting & welding apprentice and his career progression within Dalkia is a testament to his dedication and hard work. He has advanced from Apprentice to Tradesman, then Chargehand, Working Foreman and Non-Working Supervisor. After furthering his education and obtaining an HND, Stuart became a Project Manager and was quickly promoted to his current position as Senior Project Manager.
Stuart reflected on his apprenticeship and the grounding it’s given him “My apprenticeship gave me an appreciation that most of what a job entails is effort and attitude. In the main, skills can be learnt and issues overcome but, as with most things in life, if you want a positive outcome then you have to put the effort in.”
Rising Stars
We also have recent graduates like Liam Park (pictured) and Dylan Campbell, who have progressed in different directions following their apprenticeships. Liam completed his plumbing and heating apprenticeship in 2021 and inspired by his line manager, moved into an engineering- focussed role studying Building Services Engineering for two more years. Liam is now excelling as a Junior Mechanical Engineer. Dylan was offered a permanent full-time position as an Engineer within the FM Engineering team after completing a 4-year Multi-Skilled apprenticeship.
We asked Dylan what he enjoyed most about his apprenticeship?
“The fantastic colleagues I’ve worked alongside, gaining more on the job experience and learning something new every day. From the engineers to the office staff I’ve found that everyone tries their best to help you in any way they can. They are always available to give you advice or steer you in the right direction should you need it.”
And Liam, about what he feels are the most valuable skills he learnt.
“Definitely the ability to problem solve and overcome everyday tasks successfully.”
Great advice for the next generation
We asked Stuart and Liam what advice they would give to future apprentices starting at Dalkia?
Stuart’s advice: “At Dalkia there’s a strong team culture and apprentices are always looked after, encouraged to be part of the team and achieve their goals. Everyone is willing to share knowledge and experience along the way, which is invaluable. As long as you always try your best and take pride in your work, you’ll succeed.”
Liam’s advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. It shows you have an interest in the task at hand.”
