Engineering a Sustainable Future for Penicuik High School

Our Scottish Division are continuing to secure more contracts in the East of Scotland with the recent £11 million award of Penicuik High School in Midlothian. We will deliver the full Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) package for the school’s new extension alongside supporting the refurbishment of the 1930s building.

Delivered by main contractor, Morrison Construction, this project adds to a growing portfolio of education sector work and demonstrates our capability as a trusted partner, providing sustainable solutions through strong collaboration and technical expertise.

Our MEP solution has been developed to carefully balance the preservation of the 1930s heritage building with the delivery of modern, sustainable building services. Our works are helping improve the buildings energy performance through high-efficiency Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems and intelligent controls. This will also support compliance with the Learning Estate Investment Programme and Midlothian Council’s Net Zero objectives, while ensuring the character and integrity of the existing building is maintained for future generations.

Construction is already underway on the three-storey new-build learning environment, which will provide modern teaching facilities for nearly 1,000 pupils. Once complete, the new school will provide high-quality teaching, sports, dining, community, and wellbeing spaces, including significantly enhanced provision for pupils with Additional Support Needs.

“Our appointment at Penicuik High School reflects our proven ability to deliver complex MEP installations on major education projects,” said John Irvine, Regional Director at Dalkia. “Combining new-build and refurbishment works, this project will transform the school estate, and our experience in the education sector will help ensure its successful delivery.”
