NHS birthplace partners with Dalkia UK to design £18.9m green transformation project

Trafford Hospital, birthplace of the NHS, is set to become the UK’s first retrofitted carbon Net Zero in-patient hospital. Manchester University NHS Foundation, operator of Trafford Hospital, has partnered with Dalkia UK to design an energy solution that will end the hospital’s reliance on natural gas. Additionally, the project is supported by £18.9 million grant funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

Dalkia’s design will replace the hospital’s ageing steam energy infrastructure with a low temperature heat network using heat pump technology, along with roof and cavity wall insulation to boost overall efficiency. The project is expected to save the hospital around £100,000 in energy costs per year. Trafford Hospital is set to be the first NHS hospital to upgrade its entire energy system, within a live environment, to achieve total energy decarbonisation.

Mark Cubbon, Group Chief Executive of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘This pioneering scheme is fantastic news as we work towards making the NHS Carbon Net Zero. For our patients, staff and communities, this will mean knowing that the facilities which they rely on every day are also a key part of our work to improve the environment for everyone, helping address the wider causes of poor health and tackling inequalities.

This major project will make a significant contribution to Greater Manchester’s move to Carbon Net Zero ahead of the national deadline. Trafford Hospital has an incredible heritage, and we are incredibly proud that it will once again be making history by helping to preserve the planet for future generations.’

Jonathan Kershaw, Managing Director of Dalkia UK – Energy Services said: ‘This project demonstrates technical innovation that delivers significant decarbonisation for Trafford Hospital. Having already delivered a successful energy retrofit project at North Manchester General Hospital, Dalkia is delighted to be a trusted partner for their journey towards net zero. I look forward to working with the Trust and their team at Trafford Hospital on this next stage.’

This project is predicted to reduce the hospital’s scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 92% by 2040. Construction is set to start in Autumn 2024 with estimated completion by Spring 2026.
