As EDF’s seven Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations approach the defueling phases of their lifecycles, Dalkia worked in partnership with EDF to optimise the irradiated fuel flask process. The flask route optimisation programme improved processing efficiency to support required de-fuelling.

Approach

One of the key challenges of delivering this programme was working in and around operational nuclear facilities. Dalkia ensured personnel carrying out field supervision were fully cognisant with their responsibilities to follow Dalkia, client and radiological safety rules.

These projects were all multi-discipline, multi-specialist delivery with coordination between working parties and the operator being key to successful delivery.

Dalkia’s scope of work included installation of new flask leak test equipment, flask lid bolt torque tools and lighting systems along with commissioning of installed oxygen depletion monitoring equipment. The team also undertook the delivery of a new gate interlock system, detailed civil engineering elements, testing and commissioning support and full install of flask wash system control panels.

Result

Dalkia has successfully completed five key defueling preparation projects with the remaining two planned as they approach defueling.

Dalkia are a key partner to delivery on this project and a variety of other defueling preparation projects. Over the last 15 years Dalkia has delivered over 1,000,000-man hours of safe project delivery on EDF sites. This is phenomenal.
