Netherhall Junior School Biodome Installation

As part of Dalkia’s PFI schools’ total facilities management contracts, we undertake a variety of projects to help schools further develop their pupils.

In July 2023, the Imtech group company rebranded to Dalkia.

Dalkia install biodome to enhance school’s learning facilities.

Most recently, Netherhall Junior requested the means for the children to grow their own organic vegetables and fruit in hydroponic tanks, which hold water and nutrients that plants need to live.

An outdoor biodome glasshouse was selected, in the form of a 6m diameter globe, with shatterproof polycarbonate panels. The biodome was delivered as a kit which allowed for it to be efficiently fitted and fixed on-site.

The Dalkia team demonstrated great expertise during the biodome installation

The 10-day installation went very smoothly, particularly as its location was ideal with very flat land and close to an accessible water supply. Moreover, to ensure the structure was energy-efficient, a solar panel was installed to power the lighting and water system, and with a south-facing position, it was perfect for solar gain.

Rose Kendall, a Project Manager at Dalkia, said: ‘Our engineering expertise means we can support the client with any additional work to enhance the school’s learning facilities. The biodome installation is a great example of this in terms of allowing the children to learn about and maintain their own ecosystem in an innovative structure.’

With the option to upgrade the hydroponic system to aquaponic, the glasshouse provides scope to develop and improve its function.

Zoe Lowe, Head of School at Netherhall Junior concluded: ‘The Dalkia team demonstrated great expertise during the biodome installation, which now having been completed, is used to show the children how to grow all sorts of vegetables and fruit by our dedicated staff, who also cook the produce. Not only does this provide our pupils with the skills and tools to cultivate organic food, but they can also see the benefits in a live environment.’
