Capula wins multi-million-pound design and manufacturing contract for Hinkley Point C

Industrial control and automation systems specialists Capula will design, qualify and manufacture safety critical Marshalling Cabinets for the UK’s first new nuclear power station in a generation. Contract will lead to additional investment in new facilities and a strengthening of the UK’s manufacturing capability.

In July 2023, the Imtech group company rebranded to Dalkia.

Capula, a Dalkia company, has been awarded a multi-million-pound contract to design and manufacture safety classified Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Marshalling Cabinets to house the electronic circuitry for Hinkley Point C. The cabinets are a first of a kind to be designed and made in the UK and will link the station’s control systems together – playing a vital role in the station’s long-term operations.

Following a comprehensive procurement process, Capula was selected for their significant nuclear industry experience having supported projects across the UK civil nuclear industry for over four decades, working on both existing and new build programmes.

Capula brings a wealth of skills and experience in automation and system integration, which will allow our team to deliver a high quality, ‘right first time’ system and ensure that HPC can be safely brought on-line as planned in 2025, paving the way for our sister project at Sizewell C.

Glenn Lee, Electrical Project Manager, Hinkley Point C

Dave Pickles, Capula Managing Director, said: “Being selected to deliver this project is testament to our heritage and expertise in supporting nuclear customers across the lifecycle, and I want to pay credit to our excellent team who were instrumental in securing this exciting project.”

We will continue to strengthen our industrial design and manufacturing capability through training and investment in our facilities, so we are ready to support this and other major projects across the UK and beyond.

Staffordshire-based Capula is one of 400 Hinkley Point C suppliers based across the East and West Midlands where £350 million has already been spent as a result of the new nuclear project. Strengthening its design and manufacturing capability, this project will see Capula and its extended supply chain create a number of new engineering roles.

It is great to see how Staffordshire and the wider West Midlands still leads the way for great British high-quality manufacturing for major projects such as nuclear power stations.

Sir Bill Cash, MP for Stone

Simon Parsons, Hinkley Point C MEH Programme Director, said: “We are delighted to welcome Capula into the Hinkley Point C supply chain – making full use of the company’s Staffordshire based design and manufacturing capability for such an important element of the new power station.

Development of a near identical power station at Sizewell C will bring further opportunities for our extensive and experienced UK supply chain.

The Member of Parliament for Stone, Sir Bill Cash, said: “I’m very pleased to see Stone-based Capula create 50 new local engineering roles. Nuclear power not only creates jobs and supports the economy across the entire nation, but it is also a vital part of meeting the country’s climate targets.

The new nuclear power station in Somerset will help the UK cut its emissions to Net Zero and produce enough reliable low carbon electricity to meet 7% of the country’s needs.
