Celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week

This Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we asked some of our apprentices for their insights on their experience, why they chose Dalkia and how they are contributing to a sustainable future.

Our Scottish business offers a range of apprenticeships such as mechanical, electrical, fire and security and more. Below – Calum, Scott, Jay and Adam share how they’re being given the space to develop their skills while learning on the job.

What skills or knowledge have you gained so far that you didn’t expect?

“I knew there would be technical training, but I didn’t realise how much teamwork and communication matter in this industry. I have picked up practical problem-solving, fault-finding, and a better feel for how different systems behave in the real world.” Adam McCabe, Fire and Security Apprentice.

Can you describe a moment during your apprenticeship that made you feel proud or accomplished?

“When I get the chance to use the skills I have learned at college and on site to independently complete jobs to a high standard.” Jay Mitchell, Multi-Skilled Apprentice.

“It’s great to see projects I’ve contributed to reach completion and be handed over successfully. It’s rewarding to know my work has played a part in delivering a quality outcome.” Scott Heasley, Mechanical Apprentice.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in your field?

“Always work hard and be eager to learn as much as possible. Use your experienced colleagues to get advice from and act as sounding boards.” Calum McEwan, Electrical Apprentice.

How do you feel your role is contributing to Dalkia’s wider purpose of a sustainable future?

“I’m assisting in the install and maintenance of modern, energy-efficient systems. By using digital reporting and keeping systems running smoothly, I help minimise callouts and energy use on site. Every job I work on supports safer, more efficient buildings which is an important part of creating long-term, sustainable environments.” Adam McCabe, Fire and Security Apprentice.
