Dalkia has collaborated with the Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust for over five years on an extensive project, encompassing two major acute hospitals. The multifaceted scheme has successfully delivered guaranteed energy savings while significantly reducing critical backlog in energy infrastructure and building fabric. The project includes four distinct projects across two hospital sites, covering an extensive area of 105,000 m².

Sustainability Objectives

The primary sustainability objectives of the projects were to achieve robust energy savings, enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure, and implement eco-friendly improvements to building fabric. By incorporating energy-efficient technologies such as LED lighting, CHP, and upgrades to boiler plant and air handling systems, the project aimed to achieve substantial energy savings and reduce the hospitals’ carbon footprint.

The projects have achieved remarkable results, including:

  • An annual carbon saving of 4,939 tCO2e
  • Approximately £1.25 million cost savings per year.
  • The projects addressed critical infrastructure works, particularly focusing on obsolete boiler plants, which significantly reduced the risk of catastrophic failures during winter.
  • The projects secured funding through Amber Infrastructure, enabling the successful implementation of the Energy Performance Contract.
  • The projects involved the installation of approximately 14,000 luminaires in just six months, contributing to energy savings and improved lighting efficiency.

The project’s multifaceted approach has not only achieved substantial energy savings but also significantly improved the resilience and efficiency of critical infrastructure. By incorporating eco-friendly measures and energy-efficient technologies, the Trust has successfully reduced its carbon footprint and achieved significant annual cost savings.
