Dalkia selected for M8 Charing Cross Underpass LED Lighting Upgrade

Dalkia has secured an eight-week contract with Scotland TranServ, who are upgrading the lighting system in the M8 Charing Cross Underpass on behalf of Transport Scotland.

In July 2023, the Imtech group company rebranded to Dalkia.

The new lighting system will deliver improved energy performance and is futureproofed to allow for the integration of new monitoring and performance products as they become available. Dalkia will be responsible for the design and installation of the upgrade, which will take place whilst ensuring the continued safe use of the underpass by road users.

The solution will make use of adaptive SMART LED lighting technology which is designed by our long-term partners Signify (Phillips). This will allow for lighting levels to be adjusted in line with how high traffic levels are, creating further efficiencies for energy usage. The solution will also incorporate Uninterruptable Power Supply back up to enhance security and durability and include remote monitoring.

The solution proposed by Dalkia not only delivers against our requirements but exceeds them.

The contract comes as a result of recommendations Dalkia made to Scotland TranServ following maintenance work carried out in 2017 and monitoring of the lighting systems in place in the following two years. Dalkia will be designing and installing the lighting infrastructure and cabling.

Dalkia has built an enviable reputation for being experts in the field of tunnel lighting, having completed over £30 million of tunnel lighting contracts in the past five years. It is this expertise that helped secure the win.

Steve Henry, Operations Manager at Dalkia, said “We’re delighted to have been chosen by Scotland TranServ to carry out the lighting upgrade of the Charing Cross Underpass. By combining advanced LED technology with robust infrastructure and future-proofed monitoring capabilities which allows remote monitoring for failures and energy consumption, we’re confident that we can provide a lighting solution that will keep traffic flowing and drivers safe for many years to come.”

Aled Davies, Principal Lighting Engineer at Scotland TranServ, added “The solution proposed by Dalkia not only delivers against our requirements but exceeds them. Advanced remote monitoring of energy usage is incredibly important as we look to drive efficiencies and meet environmental targets on behalf of our client, Transport Scotland, so to have a solution for the long-term that keeps up with technological developments is crucial, furthermore substantial savings on maintenance costs with the longevity of LED technology will vastly reduce the expenditure. The experience of the Dalkia team was clear to see, and we have full confidence that they will deliver a great result.
