Dalkia Wins Contract with The Pirbright Institute

Dalkia has been awarded a contract with The Pirbright Institute, a world leading centre of excellence in research and surveillance of virus diseases of farm animals and viruses that spread from animals to humans. The work, which is valued at circa £2 million, entails the design, installation and commissioning of the internal fit out of a new Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) laboratory and will be completed over a seven-month period that began in April.

In July 2023, the Imtech group company rebranded to Dalkia.

Given the complicated nature of the work carried out at The Pirbright Institute, it is imperative that the facility upholds the highest safety standards. This requires closely controlled environments, adaptable systems that can satisfy varying conditional requirements and resilient electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Dalkia has drawn on its extensive in-house experience and technical capability to work with the customer throughout the design period, ensuring that all the necessary facilities, services and plant were coordinated within the relatively small 170m2 footprint whilst still maintaining the facility seal integrity required which is essential to the fumigation process.

The new SPF facility includes incubation, hatchery and rearing rooms as well as a fumigation chamber for the decontamination of all consumables and equipment entering the SPF area. Entrance into the suite will be via a dedicated interlocked change area with a ‘shower in’ feature appertaining to an SPF environment.

Dalkia’s impressive in-house capability across mechanical, HVAC, electrical and design and vast experience of undertaking installation works in controlled environments, means that we have every confidence that Dalkia will deliver a facility that will become a brilliant asset for the Institute.

Dalkia are also providing the customer with a smart technology-based solution through the installation of innovative and intelligent lighting controls that mimic sunrise and sunset as well as specialist twin ballast luminaries to promote a poultry friendly environment.

Dalkia’s proven track record in successfully managing and executing contracts within the pharmaceutical sector as well as the ability to offer in-house mechanical, HVAC, electrical and architectural design and management services required by The Pirbright Institute, were all testament to this contract win.

Philip Kinsella, Divisional Managing Director at Dalkia, said, “We are delighted to be awarded this contract by The Pirbright Institute, which demonstrates our expertise in the pharmaceutical sector and why we’re the perfect partner for schemes of this nature. The team was presented with a number of challenging design requirements, such as the integration of a fumigation chamber, but working closely with the end user and using our experience of undertaking such works in critical environments, helped inform the design process and will ultimately ensure that we deliver a contract to the highest standards possible.”

Dr Mike Johnson, Director of Capability at Pirbright, added, “Given the sensitive nature of the work we carry out at The Pirbright Institute it was fundamental to find a partner who could deliver a solution that met our exact needs. Dalkia’s impressive in-house capability across mechanical, HVAC, electrical and design and vast experience of undertaking installation works in controlled environments, means that we have every confidence that Dalkia will deliver a facility that will become a brilliant asset for the Institute.”
