For the second year in a row, volunteers from Dalkia UK collected coins from the moat at the Tower of London’s Traitor’s Gate for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Dalkia UK gives its employees one day a year to do good work in the community and today – the Facilities team at the Houses of Parliament and the Royal Academy of Arts – collected, sorted and counted 150kg of coins, 10kg more than last year!
It has become a tradition for many of the Tower of London’s visitors to throw a coin into the moat and make a wish at one of the Tower’s most notorious sites: Traitor’s Gate. Historic Royal Palaces annually drain the moat so the coins can be collected up and donated to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in the run up to Remembrance Day. The funds are then used to support the welfare of miliary veterans and their families.
Stu Brown, Business Unit Director, Dalkia UK and Veteran expressed his in pride in supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal. He said, ‘It’s quite a change from our day job, being responsible the Facilities Management services at the Houses of Parliament, the Royal Academy of Arts and many other sites in and around the UK. It’s also particularly poignant for me, as a Veteran myself and I’m honoured to take part in this. It’s great to think that something good now comes from the once notorious Traitor’s Gate.’
